Students must be degree holders or graduates (degrees recognized by University Grants Commission) to appear for this Examination.

About UPSC

Civil Services Examination is a 3-stage examination held every year

Stage 1 – Preliminary Test

Stage 2 – Main Exam

Stage 3 – Personality Test / Interview

 

Stage 1 – Preliminary Test – consists of objective questions with 1/3rd penalty (negative marking) for wrong answers.

Paper 1 – General Studies (200 marks) 2 Hours

Paper 2 – CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) (200 marks) 2 hours (This will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%)

There is a cut-off in the Preliminary Test which varies every year and is decided by the UPSC.

Stage 2 — The Main Exam (Subjective papers of 1750 marks) consists of 9 papers which are usually held in the first week of October for around 5-7 days.

Stage 3 — Students who qualify for an Interview are called by the Interviews normally begin two weeks after the results of the main exam are revealed.

UPSC Exam Syllabus: 

Paper I – (200 marks) Duration 2 hours.

Worldwide and nationally significant current situations and events.

  • General Science

  • General issues on Climate Change, Environmental Ecology, and Biodiversity (It doesn’t require subject specialisation)

  • Indian National Movement and History of India.

  • World and Indian Geography- It includes information on civil rights, international geography, economic geography, and social geography, as well as the physical geography of India and the rest of the globe.

  • Constitution, Public Policy, Political System, Panchayati Raj, and other aspects of Indian politics and governance.

  • Social Development and Economic – It contains Social Sector initiatives, Sustainable Development, Inclusion, Demographics, Poverty, etc.

Paper II – (200 marks) Duration 2 hours.

  • Problem-solving and Decision-making. (33 % Mark Required only Qualify)

  • General mental ability

  • Comprehension

  • Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. -Class X level), Fundamental numeracy (numbers and their relationships, orders of magnitude, and so on). (Class X level)

  • Analytical ability and Logical reasoning.

  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills

UPSC MAIN EXAM SYLLABUS

Selection: Your rank in UPSC CSE will only depend on Main Examinations and your Interview (Personality Test). 

Your UPSC CSE Main consists of 1750 marks and the Interview (Personality Test) section consists of 275 marks.

Your UPSC syllabus for the main examination contains nine papers, but only seven papers are considered for the final ranking. 

In the next two examinations, you must get the minimum marks set by UPSC each year.

The main Exam of UPSC Civil Services is a written examination and it consists of the following papers which are mentioned below.
